Gawad Kalinga (GK), translated in English means “to give care,” and it is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but the world. It is a community-building movement born from the determination of Filipinos to bring hope to their country. The movement seeks to build a new nation, a strong nation, a productive nation, a nation steeped in faith and patriotism. GK’s mission, launched in October 2003, is to build 700,000 homes in 7,000 communities in 7 years, or GK777.
Sponsored by ANCOP Foundation USA, the GK777 Hero’s Run Training Program aims to support “Kalinga Luzon.” This is the urgent response of GK and its partners to the recent natural disaster that ravaged northern Philippines. A typhoon left 40,000 families devastated and homeless. Kalinga Luzon goes beyond the relief stage and works out an effective program to rehabilitate and rebuild the affected communities.
Through GK Hero’s Run, participants train for seven months to complete a 26.2 mile marathon. Others may also participate in a half marathon, 5K, and bike ride. All participants are committed to building a home for the poorest of the poor in the Philippines. |
