Team Fisher House - Champions for Military Families
Fisher House is part of the reason I'm able to run this race. After I was injured in Iraq two years ago, the folks at Fisher House provided a home for my mom and dad, walking distance from the hospital ICUs in Landstuhl and Bethesda Naval--as they have done for the families of so many injured troops. They're one of the amazing non-profits out there who support the caregivers, who often forget to take care of themselves, when their loved one is fighting to survive and recover from injury. My particular injuries included two shattered femurs, and burning shrapnel from hips to ankles, which left me with 'tri's' instead of quads in one of my legs, and acres of skin grafts. I'll be running with Rebecca Shakespeare -- one of the many physiotherapists who helped get me back on my feet. And I'll be running as a salute to the folks at Fisher House, who helped make this possible. So please give until it hurts. Because believe me, by mile five, this race is gonna hurt! Thank you, Kimberly Dozier/CBS News

Goal
A DONATION TO THE FISHER HOUSE HONORS THOSE WHO SERVE.

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. A long-term stay in a military hospital, sometimes thousands of miles from home, could mean expensive lodging and long separations from loved ones. But in recognition of the special sacrifices of severely wounded or ill service members and their families, the Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes" so that America's military families can be together during extended treatment for serious injury or lengthy physical and/or occupation therapy.

Each Fisher House creates a warm, compassionate environment where families find support and encouragement from others in similar circumstances. The houses are typically 5,000 to 16,000 square foot homes designed with eight to 21 guest suites. All are professionally decorated and beautifully furnished in the tone and style of the local region. The houses have well-stocked community kitchens, spacious dining area, and inviting living rooms complete with libraries and toys for children. Other features include in-room telephones and cable TV/VCRs, laundry facilities, housekeeping services and in-room or common-area computers with internet access. All Fisher Houses are within walking distance of the medical center, or transportation is provided. Caring staff and volunteers are available to assist guests.

Today, 38 Fisher Houses operate at 18 military bases and nine Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers throughout the nation and overseas in Germany. Since our nation has been at war, the requirements for Fisher House have changed. Many of our returning service members need intensive physical and occupational rehabilitation. Their Fisher House stays have become longer, and, as a result, more guest suites are needed. Also, because of the nature of their injuries, all new Fisher Houses are being designed to be completely handicapped accessible.

Fisher House Foundation programs are run by generous public support. Your donation will make a difference. For more information, call toll-free (888)294-8560 or click on the "home page" link at the top of this page.

The Fisher House Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organziation under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code, builds new houses, assists in coordination private support, and encourages public support for the homes. Donations to the Fisher House Foundation and individual Fisher Houses are tax-deductible to the maximum extent allowed by law.

The Foundation has received the highest possible ratings from the “watch dog” organizations that evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of nonprofit organizations: For every dollar donated to Fisher House Foundation, 97.5 cents goes directly into the Fisher House program. “Overhead,” the combination of management and fundraising expenses, is only 2.5 cents.
