Running for Breast Cancer Research and Education
In July 2006 my wife, Carol, was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was the second time she has had breast cancer. In 1987 she had breast cancer in her left breast. Her treatment at that time was a lumpectomy followed by radiation treatment. The lumpectomy was an overnight stay in the hospital for removal of not only the tumor but also removal of many lymph nodes. After the treatment, on a regular basis she would be examined by her oncologist. And after five years she was told she was cancer free and her risk was no more than the general population. Fortunately Carol continued to get her annual mammograms. In July of last year a tumor was found in the other breast. Again a lumpectomy was performed. But thanks to breast cancer research, the procedure had been improved to where it was done on an out-patient basis. But this time, because this is the second time for breast cancer she had to under go aggressive chemo-therapy. This was not fun. Everyday during the chemo process she felt worse than I do after finishing a second marathon in one weekend. I have admired the way that she took the extreme discomfort with little complaints. As I write this eight months before the first Breast Cancer Marathon, Carol has completed her heavy duty chemo, and five weeks of radiation treatment. She is now part way through a year of chemo-light. When I trained for my very first marathon in 2001, I trained with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team-n-Training raising money for leukemia and lymphoma. As a believer in privately raised research money I knew I wanted to run to raise money again, but wanted to do so for a disease that had special meaning to me. Breast Cancer is such. I have seen the benefits of 19 years of research from Carol's first breast cancer to her second. I would like to see more research so that in future women will less painful treatment options and more women will be educated to breast cancer awareness. I urge you to join me in support this Breast Cancer fund raising effort.
