My name is Darren Allison, and I have decided to join many on the road to a cure running 26.2 miles in the Chicago Marathon for cancer research. I will be running each mile in memory of people who touched my life and those of many others. Dana Roth, a teacher from Lyons, dedicated her life to teaching and inspiring many students, including myself. When cancer entered her life and those of her loved ones, she fought hard and, unfortunately, lost. Thousands of people are affected by cancer each day, and each of these miles I will be running in remembrance of those who have lost the fight against cancer. Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.
In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Over the past 26 years, we have invested more than $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. And because millions of people are counting on us to fulfill our promise, we have pledged to invest an additional $2 billion by 2017.
