| In July 2011, I became part of a movement.
Back on My Feet is a non-profit organization that uses running as a vehicle to guide people experiencing homelessness seek self-sufficiency, build confidence and self-esteem.
On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, at 5:45am, a group of volunteers (non-residential) and the homeless (residential members) meet. We greet each other with hugs and smiles. We circle-up recite the Serenity Prayer and then, run anywhere from 1-3 miles. We run and talk, sometimes about the weather, sometimes about family, sometimes about the poor choices we’ve made in life, and occasionally about why I’m still single. Some will pour their hearts out, others are more reserved and approach with skepticism so we run in silence, but eventually they talk, they always do. The remarkable component of this program is that no one is forced to participate. The residential members show up on their own volition. They may be motivated by incentives received in the program or maybe training for an upcoming race, but mostly they are motivated by hope. They personify hope. They hit every bump in the road. They’ve been chewed up and spit out by life, some several times over, but they haven’t given up. They are the most courageous people I know.
Courage is contagious.
I’m running the ING New York City Marathon, something I never thought I’d do in a million trillion years, while raising funds for an organization I believe in with all my heart.
I’m requesting donations for this journey I’m embarking on. If you’re unable to contribute, a few words of encouragement is appreciated.
I believe in Back on My Feet, what it represents, and who it helps. I’ve witness this organization transform lives, including my own. |
