| Back in mid-March I was doing a local Pacers race here in Arlington and as destiny would have I, I met Anne Mahlum the amazing founder of Back on My Feet. She told me all about the program she had created and I knew immediately it was something I had to get involved with.
I cancelled my trip that weekend to run the Shamrock 1/2 marathon in VA Beach, went to the first shoe fitting at Pacers in Clarendon, and ran the very 1st mile that following Monday. The rest is history and I continue to run with this group every week and have met some incredible people, made some great friends and seen some amazing transformations first hand....including 6 members of our group completing their first 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles) last September!!!
Back on My Feet is a fantastic organization that partners with homeless shelters here in DC and outfits members of the program with running shoes and a team of volunteers run with the members 3-4 times a week. In addition to the running and the apparel, Back on My Feet provides it's members with various incentivized goals to achieve. Some monetary and some not, such as job training and financial management seminars. The amazing part of the program is that members stay committed to this program and continue to grow as runners and more importantly as men.
The very first episode of "Gotta Get Running" we taped was all about Back on My Feet here in DC. The episode can be viewed on http://www.gottagetrunning.com . It is a tremendous overview of all the great stuff that Back on My Feet does.
I know that economic times are tough for all of us right now. If there is anything you can do to help me raise funds for this it would be greatly appreciated and help someone else who is going through even tougher economic times, living on the street and trying to change themselves for the better and forever. |
