American Cancer Society
With more than 3 million volunteers nationwide, the American Cancer Society is one of the oldest, largest, and most trusted voluntary health agencies in the United States. The Society is the largest source of private, nonprofit cancer research funds in the United States, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. Since 1946, the American Cancer Society has invested more than $3.2 billion in cancer research and has funded 42 Nobel Prize winners early in their careers. As a result, the American Cancer Society has been involved in many of the major cancer research breakthrough of the century: the Pap smear to detect cervical cancer, mammography to screen for breast cancer, the cure for childhood leukemia, PSA test for prostate cancer screening, identification of smoking as a cause of lung cancer, the discovery of genes for inherited breast and colon cancers, and the use of tamoxifen to reduce breast cancer risk, to name just a few. Every 26 seconds, someone turns to us for help by just picking up the phone. The American Cancer Society’s toll-free number – 1.800.ACS (227).2345 – provides callers with cancer information around the clock, 365 days a year.
