Goal

Why do we need an Educational Foundation in Ann Arbor? Excellence in education is an essential component of the economic vitality of our community:

* Experience has proven that excellent local public education is critical to a company’s ability to attract and retain talented employees.

* A strong, vital community attracts citizens that live here, work here, shop here and send their children to our public schools.

* Strong public schools are an investment in our community and our future.

The Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation (AAPSEF) is an independent, community based, non-profit organization committed to helping all Ann Arbor Public Schools students achieve their highest potential by providing community support for innovative and excellent educational opportunities which cannot be funded through the core budget.

The Educational Foundation was started in the early 1990’s by a group of citizens concerned about long-term community support of our public school programs and sustaining excellence in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Today the board is comprised of up to 20 members of the greater Ann Arbor community, including members of the Board of Education, the Superintendent of the Ann Arbor Public Schools, and a City Council liaison. We are supported in our mission by staff and a cadre of volunteers.

Funding of public schools in Michigan changed in 1994 with the passage of Proposal A. Funding for schools is no longer a local choice, but is determined at the state level. The Educational Foundation is the vehicle through which the citizens of Ann Arbor, with their good intention of supporting excellence in education for all of Ann Arbor’s youngest citizens, can make their good intentions a reality.

For additional information about the Educational Foundation and how to become involved, please contact Wendy Correll, Executive Director, at (734) 994-1969 or correllw@aaps.k12.mi.us, or any Educational Foundation board member.
