Team Cajuns: Stepping Up For A Cure: Taking on the Run-Up and Fighting Cancer!
Honoring David Irons...Climbing for a Cure to Cancer
My dad in May 2011 in Baton Rouge, LA 6 mos. before he passed away.
We are participating in the Empire State Building Run-Up on February 5, 2014 as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) PowerTeam in memory of my father, David Irons, who passed away in October 2011 from blood and lung cancer. Since his death, I have taken on a mission to fundraise for cancer research and hope my impact will help find a cure one day.

We have a chance of a lifetime to raise money for cancer and to run up the Empire State Building! I was chosen out of thousands of applicants. There have been less than 7,000 people participate in this event in 36 years! I submitted an application and a letter last year about my father and my mission to help others. I really didn't think I had much of a chance being chosen, but I was and I am so excited! The foundation also offered me two additional slots for a corporate team of three. My sister, Ginger and my friend DeShae will also join me in fundraising, training, and participate in the run up with me. I felt so helpless during his illness and know no other way to make a difference than to fundraise for such a great cause.

The work ahead of us?

Run up 1,576 steps to the top of the Empire State Building and raise at least $7,500 for the MMRF. Training for this event is a challenge, but nothing compared to the challenges faced by patients with multiple myeloma. You think training for this is hard, try chemo!

The Purpose: Help fund research that is extending the lives of patients and getting us closer to a cure!

Multiple myeloma is, at this time, an incurable blood cancer. Although progress has been made in treating multiple myeloma, the five-year relative survival rate remains one of the lowest of all cancers.

The mission of the MMRF is to relentlessly pursue innovative research that accelerates the development of next generation treatments to extend the lives of patients and lead to a cure.

The MMRF is the world's leading private funder of myeloma research. Their work has contributed to FDA approval of six new cancer drugs in less than a decade – a track record that's unparalleled in the world of oncology.

The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. An outstanding 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. The MMRF is consistently recognized in the top 1% of all charities reviewed by evaluators like Charity Navigator.

The Goal: Raise $7,500 for the MMRF!

Please support our participation in the Empire State Building Run-Up benefiting the MMRF! We have made a commitment to raise at least $7,500, and we will need your help to get there. Please contribute whatever you can. Any donation amount will help us reach our goal. It all adds up! Please continue to pray for us during our training phase and we look forward to showing you a picture of us at the top of the Empire State Building with my sister, Ginger and my dear friend DeShae who are also participating and fundraising with me. Please take this opportunity to give back and support this game-changing cancer organization.

Thanks for all of your support!!!

My sister, Janis Bailey Prejean, attended Baker High School and LSU. She married another LSU grad and resides outside Atlanta, Georgia with their four dogs. Jan was diagnosed a couple of years ago and has had many ups and downs with treatment and side affects from medications from this aggressive disease.
