Grant, Ted, and John Racing 2/6/13 in Rememberance of Mike Hagarty and Mary Hart
Over the past several years, Multiple Myeloma has impacted many of us at Eastern both directly and indirectly. Our good friend and CFO, Mike Hagarty, was diagnosed with MM three years ago at the age of 41. We learned very quickly that he had an uphill battle to climb. Mike fought valiantly but lost his battle, leaving behind his wife, three daughters and many close friends and family. Mary Hart, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, fought a courageous and difficult five year battle with multiple myeloma but passed away in December of 2008. We will never forget the spirit of both Mike and Mary. So in honor of everyone currently battling this disease, we’re putting our Chicken Legs to the test on February 6th in the Empire State Run-Up. We’d be humbled if you’d consider supporting us with a donation that will go directly to funding Multiple Myeloma research with the hope and vision of finding a breakthrough solution to this common yet presently incurable blood cancer.

This event is the ultimate NYC challenge and an event that interested athletes find almost impossible to get an entry for.

The race starts in the lobby of the most famous building in New York City. When the gun goes off, a wave of 100 MMRF athletes will race up 86 flights of stairs for the NYRR Empire State Building Run-Up Powered by the MMRF. A quick 1,576 steps will take me from the ground floor to the final lap around the Observation Deck that looms nearly a quarter mile above 5th Avenue.

Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer. Although progress has been made in treating multiple myeloma, the five-year relative survival rate remains one of the lowest of all cancers.

The mission of the MMRF is to relentlessly pursue innovative means that accelerate the development of next generation multiple myeloma treatments to extend the lives of patients and lead to a cure.

Since its inception in 1998, the MMRF has raised more than $200 million, making it the world's leading private funder of myeloma research to deliver new treatments to patients faster. The work of the MMRF contributed to the FDA approval of five drugs for multiple myeloma in just four years - a track record unparalleled in oncology. Due to their success in myeloma, these same drugs are now being explored as potential treatments for more than 30 other cancers.

As exceptional stewards of its donors’ investments, the MMRF consistently surpasses its peers in fiscal responsibility and an outstanding 90% of total budget go directly towards research and related programming. The MMRF is consistently recognized in the top 1% of all charities reviewed by evaluators like Charity Navigator

Led by Founder and CEO Kathy Giusti, a multiple myeloma patient and Harvard MBA, the MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world, well known for its innovative and results-oriented business model approach to funding cancer research.

Please support our participation in the Empire State Building Run Up benefiting the MMRF! Your donation can help make the difference! We have made a commitment to raise at least $7500. We need your help to get there. Please help as you can. It all adds up!

Sincere thanks, Ted, Grant and John
