| It’s been almost 17 years since my dad passed away from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. I think about him every day. I think about who he would be. I think about who I would be with him still here.
I can’t bring him back. And, I can’t fill the void his friends and family feel.
But, there’s something I CAN do. I can help the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) improve treatment for patients and, ultimately find a cure. On April 29, I will run the Big Sur International Marathon on behalf of the MMRF in memory of my dad, Gene Averill.
Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates more than 20,000 new cases of multiple myeloma were diagnosed in 2010. Although progress has been made in treating this disease, the five-year relative survival rate remains one of the lowest of all cancers.
My dad died after a year-and-a-half long fight with cancer at 46. My sister Brooke and I were 10 and 11, respectively.
Recently, I was reminded more must be done to make this disease disappear. My Pioneer Press colleague Ruben Rosario was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in April. He saw a doctor after pain stemming from an injury he sustained in a basketball game lingered for too long. His diagnosis came after MRI's, X-rays, blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy.
His case hits home. He’s a father and husband. More than anything, I want him to beat this thing. I don’t want Ruben or his family to know more pain than they do already.
And so I’m doing my part, however small, to help. I’m running the marathon a few weeks after the 17-year anniversary of my dad’s passing.
We've all been affected by cancer in some way. I hope you'll join my cancer-fighting efforts by making a donation to the MMRF. Every dollar counts.
