On May 1st of this year, I will join 31,999 other people in biking 42 miles over bridges and through the streets of New York City in their annual 5 Boro Bike Tour. When I first signed up for this adventure back in January, I had done so with the intention of crossing an item off of my Life List. I knew people who had done it and was certain it would be a good time. What I had no idea was that I could use this event as a catalyst to raise money for a cause and organization I care for.
If you know me in real life, you have learned by now that I love this stuff. Charities have gotten more and more creative over the years at setting up fundraisers that are fresh, exiciting and sometimes even exhilarating and I love nothing more than participating when I can. I know I hit some of you up kind of a lot (what up Facebook friends!), but this particular charity that I'm working with holds a special place in my heart.
There is a woman, somewhere in Canada, who is brilliant, kind, hillarious and giving. She is a teacher and a blogger and she's wonderful at both. Also? She loves someone with Multiple myeloma. She's the inspiration behind loveharder.org (GO VISIT IT NOWWW!) and my personal inspiration for choosing to be a part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation's team for the 5 Boro Bike Tour.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, five dollars is not just five dollars. Five dollars from you can inspire five dollars from him or her and grow and add up to monumental change in the medical world.
Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer. Although progress has been made in treating multiple myeloma, the five-year relative survival rate remains one of the lowest of all cancers.
The mission of the MMRF is to relentlessly pursue innovative means that accelerate the development of next generation multiple myeloma treatments to extend the lives of patients and lead to a cure.
