I am going to tap dance the half-marathon course of the Seattle Rock n Roll Marathon in order to raise funds for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. I am doing this because I have a dear friend of many years who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma about six years ago. Two of the drugs that the MMRF helped develop with their funding are directly responsible for prolonging her life and improving the quality of her life. Multiple myeloma is an incurable cancer of the plasma cell. It is the second most common blood cancer. There are approximately 50,000 people in the United States living with multiple myeloma and an estimated 15,890 new cases of the disease are diagnosed each year. The five-year survival rate for multiple myeloma remains only 32%.
As the world's number-one funder of multiple myeloma research, the MMRF has raised close to $110 million to fund 100 laboratories worldwide. The MMRF is making things happen NOW: four new treatment advances — Thalomid®, Velcade®, Revlimid®, and Doxil® — have helped extend the life expectancy of myeloma patients from four years to almost seven. Because of their success in treating multiple myeloma patients, these drugs are now being explored as treatment for 19 other cancers as well. 94% of the funds raised by MMRF go directly to support research and related programming.
