How Habitat Works
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that builds homes in partnership with deserving, working families.
Homes are purchased at zero percent interest, allowing families to build financial equity. Habitat mortgages are repaid over 20-30 years.
Habitat homeowners are true partners in the work, investing an average of 250 hours of “sweat equity” work on their homes and the homes of other Habitat families. Families’ mortgage payments help fund the construction of future Habitat homes.
Habitat of Durham unlocks futures and rebuilds communities from the inside out.
Habitat offers community solutions to community problems.
Durham County has the lowest home-ownership rate in the region. Habitat is working to increase home ownership among working families who earn 25-60 percent of Durham’s median income. Habitat of Durham is the only home-ownership program that works in partnership with these deserving families.
Since 1987, Habitat of Durham has broken ground on more than 175 homes, unlocking keys to opportunity for more than 500 individuals.
