Matt’s Story

Miles For Matt Foundation was established in memory and in honor of Matt Scarpati, 19, who was killed by a speeding, drunk, motorcyclist on the Wantagh State Bike Path on July 20, 2009. This should never have happened. So in honor of those who believe this too, we ride!

Routes:
The Miles for Matt Bike Tour is a bike event, not a race. All riders are expected to obey all traffic laws. There will be state and park police traffic support to close the north bound lanes of the Wantagh State Parkway. There will be a barrier between the two lanes of use heading south. The barrier should always be on your left and no one should cross into the other lane. One loop from the start to the turnaround in the theater parking lot and back to the start is 8.5 miles. Please be courteous to other cyclists.

The turnaround/ rest stop is about 4.25 miles from Cedar Creek Park. This is an opportunity to change cycling clothes, if you dressed too warmly or too lightly. There will be SAG drivers on the course from start until12:00.

Parking and Start:
Please follow the directions of parking marshals as you turn into Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, Parking Lot 5A. Those arriving early will be able to park near the start/finish in Parking Lot 5A, where after obtaining your wrist band, you can walk to the start. Please be prepared to show the marshal your wristband. There will be areas within Parking Lot 5A reserved for rider staging, volunteer parking, and park users not involved in the ride. Parking Marshals will be available to direct you to rider parking.

We will have a phased start. Phased starts improve the safety and enjoyment of the ride for everyone by avoiding the confusion of a mass start of riders of varying ability. There will be three phases based on the estimate speed of the rider.

Note:
Children age 17 and under and must be accompanied by an adult.

You cannot register for adults other than yourself, as each person must have their waiver signed/checked off by a parent or guardian and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We ask that parents ride and supervise their children. Helmets are required to be worn by ALL riders.

Please note that the Miles for Matt Bike Tour is a rain or shine event and no refunds will be given.
