2010 Changes

As the economy has tanked, the cost of making this race event happen has risen. We have tried to remain financially conservative for 10+years. Now the margin is gone and the race/event lost money in 2009.

Registration fees will rise to cover higher rider/site insurance but we will reduce food costs.> The gourmet meal has unfortunately become too expensive without a major price increase $20/rider. To minimize the pain we have scaled back the post ride buffet to a bbq with many extras.

More 2010 Changes

Top 3 riders will get a custom medal w/ "Hillier than Thou" logo if there are more than 3 riders registered in that group. Otherwise only the top rider will get a medal if finish w/in 8hr.

Painting has started, but hopefully the detours won't be too many as there have been many.

We have received 240+ea of GU gels, Blocks and ROCTANE and 85gallons of GU BREW.

There will be multiple flavors of Clif Bars and Power Bars (~250/ea) spread across Rest Stops.

Race Countdown

>1/2 rest stops have on-site water access and added 24@7gal water containers to add to water jugs. We're still growing and making this ride better!

We will always welcome more volunteers! We've lost a few due to sickness & unavoidable issues. The more the merrier. Visit a rest stop/finish line and see the riders come in.

Have 96gal Gatorade and 90gal GU Brew should be enough!

Hope to be recording the top finishers to resolve any placing questions.

FAQs

Expect a bike race but very different than any previous events. Every year is an unique route w/ big changes! Climbs are skewed more to the back half in 2010. Fiddlers is @50miles. Bloomsbury is back!

Many riders want the cue sheet early. This isn't possible. 2009 route changed 14x in the last 8days. Sometime route has changed on Sunday due to "emergency road work".

We have redesigned outward loop after the camp for safety per rider suggestions.

Start/ Finish support (partial list)

Pre: Restrooms w/ changing stalls, Coffee/Tea, continental breakfast

During: GU Gels/Roctane/Blocks/Brew, Clif/PowerBars, snacks and SAG support

End: SHOWERS, Meal/BBQ and dessert

Post Ride Recovery

You willl enjoy a great recovery when the ride is over! Everything is there from a full meal, desserts, swim in the pool & showers are available to help recover & relax.

Rider's Suggestion Box @Camp Pavillion

Please offer your opinions on:
1. Is having a finisher medal or is placing money more important?

2. Is the FINAL climb into Camp an issue or a problem?

3. Should we change the "Death on a Bicycle" logo?

4. Is there anything you would like to see in a future race/event?

5. Are there any specific climbs or Roads you'ld like to see in a future Hillier than Thou?

2010 Post Ride & Pre-Rides

Anyone who wishes to ride the routes after the event please email. We usually have at least one ride at a more relaxed/ friendly pace.

Before the Hillier than Thou race/event there are at least 2 training/pre-rides available to test proposed routes & to train for all of the available routes/race.

Rides are always climb at your pace & meetup @ top.

Pre-Ride #1 Report

On Saturday, Jud Hand led a 64 mile practice ride with five other riders. Ray has been a regular for several years. Roy Yates and his son Tony are new to Hillier. Also riding was another hillier veteran Walt Pettigrew and Jon Eiseman.

Comments were generally quite positive on scenery and low traffic. There is a long scenic stretch along the Delaware River.

Pre-Ride #2 Sat 8/7 @8:30am Mansfield ES -Jud Hand

We rode ~53mi, climbed Fiddlers Elbow & returned to start in 12mi. We climbed ~5500' in 65mi. Everybody seemed to enjoy course and commented on its beauty and light traffic.

9riders showed w/ 7 staying together for majority. Walt and Rick L. from NJ Rando finished ~1:20mins later. Pack was Shane Beake, riding buddy Alan Edelson and Bill Kolano of Western Jersey Wheelmen (Alan did Hillier ~10yr ago), crit racer Matt H., Princeton Freewheeler Peter T. and NYCC rider Al (from NYC?) and Jud.

Amenities
All registered riders get a T-shirt, food before/during/after with a free BBQ and hot/cold showers

Rider Support
We have kept costs down for higher rider payout. We still have more amenities and support that raise this event beyond a century/benefit ride and any race that you've ever done. We LISTEN to our riders every year by incorporating multiple rider ideas and suggestions (e.g. clothing drops, energy bars/gels @RRs). There are more REST STOPS on ALL routes than typical rides. They will have almost anything needed to keep you going. Our cues/arrows are positioned that typically no one makes a wrong turn. Some previous years T-shirts will be for sale the day of the race/event.
