Riders can choose from four bicycle routes: 30, 50, 75 or 100 miles – or may ride a 30-mile Class of Wheels led by Bike New York’s award-winning Bicycle Education Program.
This is the eighth annual Twin Lights Ride presented by Bike New York with the Highlands Business Partnership.
Cycling Choices:
30 miles:
Oceanport Loop. A ride through the Monmouth County communities south and west of Highlands including Rumson, Oceanport and Middletown. Flat to rolling terrain with a couple of hills. Riders have the option to join a group ride led by an experienced leader – this is just a group, not the Class on Wheels ride described below. Cumulative elevation gain: 1364 feet.
50 miles:
Colts Neck Express. A ride with varied terrain and scenery, from sandy coastline to horse farms and woodlands. To the 30-mile ride we add a loop through Colts Neck and Holmdel. There are some long and rolling roads and a few hills. This ride is harder than the 42 miles of the TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour. Riders have the option to join a group ride led by an experienced leader. Cumulative elevation gain: 2629 feet.
75 miles:
Earle Roundabout. A loop into Howell Township around the enormous military facility in central Monmouth County and along the Manasquan Reservoir. Long roads and gently rolling terrain provide a speedy ride into Colts Neck where we reconnect with the 50-milers and the hillier part of the ride. Several long stretches for fast riding. The ride is recommended for experienced and enthusiastic cyclists. Cumulative elevation gain: 3373 feet.
100 miles:
Monmouth Challenge. This is an exhilarating ride through nearly the whole length and breadth of Monmouth County, including a loop around the Turkey Swamp Wildlife Area. Plenty of long stretches for fast riding. The ride is recommended for experienced and enthusiastic cyclists. Cumulative elevation gain: 4058 feet.
Educational Ride - 30 miles:
Oceanport Loop Class on Wheels: This is a chance to improve your cycling skills on the same route as described above, but with a certified cycling instructor. In a class directed to the novice cyclist, you’ll learn skills necessary to ride predictably and confidently in traffic. Lessons include learning to use your bike’s gear system, how to scan, signal, and change lanes, and how to navigate intersections. Adults and mature teens should be able to start and stop, balance, and control their bicycles, and maintain a 12 mph pace on level terrain. Participants must have taken at least one 20-mile ride within the past year. When you register for the event, there’s no extra charge, but space is limited.
Preparing for Ride Day
You must wear a properly fitted helmet to participate in a Bike New York Ride. Be sure to prepare your bicycle, carry necessary tools and supplies, and wear proper cycling attire. Bring your helmet, water bottles or another hydration system, extra lube and patch kit, pump and tire levers, sunglasses and sunscreen, money and photo identification. We will help with bike repairs wherever possible, but everyone is responsible for their own maintenance.
Youth Participants
We welcome the participation of families with children. We ask that families with younger children choose the shortest route. Cyclists 14 years and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and everyone under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
Rest Areas
Rest Areas are spaced every 8-19 miles along the routes. They are stocked with water, snacks and beverages such as a sports drink, bananas, cookies, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Other rider services include toilets, first aid, help and information and basic bike repair.
Support
SAG (support and gear) marshals traveling in vehicles and on bikes will patrol specific stretches of the route to spot riders who require assistance. In addition, riders can call a rider hot line to dispatch a SAG team to their location. SAG marshals will sweep the entire route at the end of the Ride.
