Brief Description

Inspired by the huge success of our 12 hours of Cranky Monkey race, the inaugural 9 Hours of Cranky Monkey Mountain Bike Relay Race will kick-off our mountain biking season. Solo racers and teams of 2 or 3 will churn out as many 9-mile laps as they can in a 9 hour period, from 11am-8pm.

Overview

Racers are going to LOVE Rocky Gap for its awesome trail network, fantastic facilities, and gorgeous lake views. We are really excited about this event and anticipate it being wildly popular! Come on out and race with the monkey!

About Rocky Gap and Facilities

Rocky Gap is just a 2.5 hour drive from the Washington and Baltimore metro areas. On both Fri 15/14 and Sat 15/15, racers will be permitted to camp in the huge grassy pit area located along the course and next to two gorgeous beaches ($10/team/night - pay at check-in). Swimming is permitted in the lake and at that time of year, the water temperature should be chilly but refreshing for those in-between-lap swims. For those not camping, there is a lodge right on site and plenty of nearby hotels.

Course

The 9 Hours of Cranky Monkey race course consists of a 9 mile lap around a fun, challenging, and semi-technical loop. The course is very diverse and has a little of everything - smooth lakeside single-track, flat open grassy areas, a few rock gardens, log ramps, several steep hills, and a couple of long fire road sections.

Race Format

Solos and teams of 2 or 3 will complete as many 9-mile laps as possible in a 9 hour period, from 11am-8pm. Team members alternate laps in relay fashion. An eletronic e-punch timing system, similar to chip timing, will be used to accurately calculate lap times.
