ABOUT THE KATIE RIDE
The Katie Ride (& Walk) for Life is the annual fundraising event for the Katie Caples Foundation. Each spring in Amelia Island, Florida, cyclists and walkers raise funds to underwrite organ transplant education, raise awareness for the importance of organ donation and stimulate organ donor commitment.
WHY WE RIDE
Although only 17, Katie Caples touched more people than most do in a lifetime. A junior on the Bishop Kenny cross-country state championship team and National Honor Society student, she also found time to participate in Habijax, Paint the Town and Harbor House. Katie was humble and extremely generous. Her
lasting act of generosity was the decision to become an organ donor. A decision that would impact lives – literally.
Katie was driving home on April 18, 1998 from a March of Dimes walk when she was broadsided on the driver side of her SUV. The impact caused severe trauma to her brain and she remained in a coma for six days before she died.
Katie’s legacy lives on through the Katie Caples Foundation and the Katie Ride for Life. As an organ and tissue donor, Katie provided vital, life-saving, organs for six recipients (age 6 to 62) and enhanced the lives of dozens more.
ORGAN DONOR EDUCATION PROGRAM
Created in 2004 through a partnership with the Katie Caples Foundation, Life Quest Organ Recovery Services and the nationally acclaimed Decision: Donation curriculum, more than 17,700 high school students each year are educated and encouraged to register as an organ and tissue donor.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
2011 James S. Wolf, M.D. Courage Award – Presented annually by Donate Life America in recognition of someone who has made a significant contribution, on a regional or national level, toward educating the public about the need for organ, eye and tissue donation. The 2011 award was presented to Susan and David Caples of the Katie Caples Foundation.
