About This Activity

Description

We're sorry, but this activity is over. The last meeting was Tuesday, October 15, 2013.

Brain Builders is a unique program designed to maintain and improve cognitive health while decreasing the chances of developing memory problems such as dementia.  Developed from the latest research on memory and aging, the course includes a variety of challenging activities, presentation of research data, guidelines for nutirition and more. The course was creaded by Dr. Robert G. Winningham, PhD., chair of the psychology division at Western Oregon University (WOU) and co-director of Geriatric Wellness Center.  Dr. Winningham has over 16 years of experinece in applied memory issues and has conducted research on older adults and their cognitive abilities. He develops programs to improve older adults' cognitive and physical well-being,has trained over 1,000 instructors in North America, and promotes "use it or lose it"
in regards to cognitive health.

"If older adults can maintain their cognitive abilitiy, they will require less care and possibly delay or even eliminate the need to go to a nursing home. Cognitively stimulating activities may also postpone symptoms of dementia, which could also delay the need for intensive care." - Dr. Winningham, Journal of Mental Health and Aging, fall 2003.
