The Columbia region's beautiful southern scenery serves as the backdrop for the Columbia SC Marathon. Springtime in Columbia proves to be the perfect, moderate temperature for runners to enjoy this all paved road race. The race begins near the heart of the University of South Carolinas campus, taking runners past the historic Horseshoe. This portion of the original campus dates back to 1805 and is still the heart of the University. The 11 buildings that make up the tradition-rich Horseshoe frame a lush lawn that is an irresistible gathering place for students, faculty, local residences and alumni. After traveling through some of the most scenic parts of the University, runners make their way to Five Points, an entertainment district popular with college students. After a brief run into Five Points, participants run through the historic neighborhoods of Shandon, Sherwood Forest, Heathwood and Lake Katherine, all showcasing homes and bungalows with Southern charm, class and character. Shandon is a vibrant, multi-generational community whose homes reflect one hundred years of architectural heritage. The wide, tree-lined streets are favorites of residents and others who stroll, walk, jog or run, while the neighborhood children and adults enjoy the pleasant parks spaced throughout the urban suburb. After completing the portion of the course near gorgeous Lake Katherine, runners will make their way back toward downtown Columbia, running along popular Trenholm Road. From here, runners will turn back into downtown Columbia, following Gervais Street and turning onto historic Pickens Street. This final portion of the course is completely flat! Here, runners will pass the Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens, which was constructed in 1818 and occupied by several of Columbia's wealthiest families. Today, the grounds are a popular location for weddings and events, and the home itself is a museum. With less than a mile to go, runners will turn left onto Richland Street and left again onto Main Street, Columbias vibrant historic shopping, entertainment, and residential district. Runners will pass the Columbia Museum of Art, the historic Nickelodeon Theatre, Columbia City Ballet, and a number of hotels, restaurants, and residential buildings. Main Street is the host to numerous outdoor markets and festivals throughout the year and even includes an outdoor ice skating rink during the winter. As runners take in the sights along Main Street, they will be running towards the South Carolina State house and the finish line! Right in the hub of downtown Columbia, the copper domed South Carolina State House houses the government of South Carolina. Construction began on the structure in 1851, and damage to the building from General Sherman's cannons is marked with bronze stars. Runners will finish their race at the intersection of Gervais Street and Main Street directly in front of the State House. This exciting tour of historic Columbia is not to be missed!
