About This Activity

The Show-Me STATE GAMES (SMSG), a non-profit program of the Governors Council on Physical Fitness and Health, is the largest STATE GAMES in the Nation! With over 40 sports and 17-20 events for all ages and ability levels the SMSG has a competition for you! Events are held throughout the year. The biggest Olympic-style sports festival in the Nation is held the last 2 weekends of July and the first weekend of August. 26,000-28,000+ athletes come to Columbia, MO to compete on these three weekends for a chance to win the gold and become state champions in their favorite sports. New in 2008! Thirteen other member states of the National Congress of State Games; Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin have all agreed to send their athletes to compete in the 3rd weekend of the Show-Me STATE GAMES. This weekend will now be called the STATE GAMES of Mid-America. States from the Midwest Region of the National Congress of STATE GAMES will now be able to send the athletes who participated in their State Games to Missouri where they all can compete for a chance to qualify for the State Games of America in Colorado, Springs in 2009. The SGMA event will be held on even years, since the State Games of America is held on odd years, with the first two festivals being held in 2008 and 2010. Opening ceremonies for the SMSG and SGMA will be at Mizzou arena on July 20th at 7pm. Athletes are encouraged to participate in the parade of athletes and everyone is invited to experience the pageantry of the opening ceremonies for FREE!In 2003, Sports Illustrated said the GAMES were the biggest and best State Games in the Nation! In 2007, ESPN listed the Show-Me STATE GAMES as "One of the Hundred Things All Sports Fans Must Experience Before They Die". As the GAMES have continued to grow, they are now truly a year round activity. Included among the activities the SMSG hosts the MFA Oil Break time Shootout, a high school basketball shootout which features some of Missouri’s finest high school basketball teams and is played in January at Mizzou Arena; Shape Up Missouri, a wellness initiative which provides kids and adults an opportunity to lose weight and get fit; Youth Basketball Tournament, held in February; the Junior High Hoopfest Basketball Tournament held in March; the Salton SMSG Benefit Golf Tournament in May; the Missouri State Senior Games in June; the Hooah! Sports Challenge at Ft. Leonard Wood and the 3 v 3 SoccerFest held in June and November. This list continues to grow as the GAMES look to add event more sports, competitors and cities to host events in the years to come. The Show-Me STATE GAMES are here for all Missourians and we encourage you to participate in one of the events, or volunteer to work the GAMES.
