About This Activity

Welcome!

With varying distances and challenges, we invite athletes of all abilities to join us for a wonderful weekend of fitness events in sparkling Clearwater, Florida!

Our events consist of:
• Sunday, January 20: 7th Annual Clearwater Marathon
• Sunday, January 20: 8th Annual Clearwater Halfathon
• Sunday, January 20: 7th Annual Clearwater 5-Miler
• Sunday, January 20: 4th Annual Clearwater 5K Fitness Walk

This year marks the relaunch of our full marathon, previously know as the Florida Gulf Beaches Marathon, which we staged for six years from January 2000 to January 2005. The loop course starts in downtown Clearwater, heads west over to Clearwater Beach, south along the beaches to Indian Shores, east over Park Boulevard Bridge to the Pinellas Trail, north on the Trail back to Clearwater, 26.2 miles later.

Our halfathon and 5-Miler races feature out-and-back courses, which are mostly flat and aesthetically varied, while challenging, due to the courses passing over the majestic Clearwater Memorial Bridge twice.

Halfathon athletes also ascend the Sand Key Bridge twice - at mile 4 and at mile 9. The high point for each bridge is just 75 feet above sea level, with the rest of the course totally flat. The scenic courses, all of which are within 1/4 mile of Clearwater Bay or the Gulf of Mexico, are precisely measured and USATF certified.

All events officially start on Clearwater's waterfront at 7:05 am, heads north and east on the Drew Street Extension, south on Osceola, and west over the majestic Clearwater Memorial Bridge to Clearwater Beach. Our 5-mile athletes turn back on Clearwater Beach, returning over the Clearwater Causeway to Coachman Park.

Our Halfathon athletes continue south on Clearwater Beach to and over the Sand Key Bridge into Sand Key Park, south to the Belleair Beach city limits, before returning back to Clearwater's downtown waterfront along the same route to the finish line adjacent to Coachman Park, the perfect place to relax and recover.

Our Clearwater 5K Fitness Walk was created to promote an active lifestyle and will be especially appealing to those who made New Year Resolutions to lead a more healthy lifestyle. It will be staged as a fundraiser, with nearly all proceeds from this non-competitive event earmarked for non-profit organizations.

Similar to our Clearwater races, the course will start at Clearwater's waterfront, and follow the same route towards Clearwater Beach. There will be a turn-around point marked on the Clearwater Causeway, directing walkers back over the bridge, through downtown, to our waterfront finish line.

There are NO transfers to other athletes. ALL refunds from ALL races will be issued at the same time - after our Florida Beach Halfathon on or about April 1, 2013.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Florida's weather in January can't be beat: average low is 51, average high is 71, perfect for long distance running and a mid-winter vacation on our award-winning beaches!

Since we started in January, 2000, our races have attracted athletes from nearly every state in the USA and about 20 different countries.

USATF SANCTIONED
All our races are sanctioned and insured through USATF for runners, joggers, and walkers ONLY. Strollers, skaters, skateboards and bicycles are NOT allowed on the course during our races.

HEADPHONES AND IPODS
Headphones of any type are now allowed at USATF sanctioned events, but are discouraged due to safety concerns, not only during the actual race, but as importantly, while athletes are training in an uncontrolled environment. Individual races may impose their own regulations, but we don’t, as it would be nearly impossible to enforce.

FITNESS WALKERS
Are welcome in all of our events and encouraged to participate. Walkers in our Marathon and Halfathon expecting to finish slower than a 15-minute per mile pace are required to start early each day at 6:35 am, allowing them to reach the finish line by the 10:05 am cut-off for the Halfathon or the 1:35 pm cut-off for the Marathon. This early start also allows our road restrictions to expire earlier, keeping residents and city officials happy with our event.

MARATHON AWARDS
All finishers in the marathon will earn unique, Running Starfish gold medals.

Custom plaques for M/F overall, masters (40+) and grandmasters (50+), three deep

Age group awards offered three deep in standard 5 year increments in each race.

HALFATHON AWARDS

CLEARWATER HALFATHON & CLEARWATER MARATHON VIRTUAL RUNS
Registration is now OPEN for our Virtual Runs during the weeks surrounding January 20th to coincide with the actual running of our race.

Net proceeds (after costs of bib, medal, shipping, administration) will be donated to several small local non-profits to be determined, including running clubs and the Partners For Life Foundation, created by Lorraine Yaslowitz to memorialize her husband Jeff, a K9 police officer in St. Petersburg, FL lost in the line of duty on January 24, 2011. The foundation's mission is to lend support to families who lose loved ones to senseless acts of violence.

For information: http://www.partnersforlifefoundation.org/

Here is how our Virtual Runs work:
1) Athletes register for $30 for Halfathon or $40 for the Marathon.

2) Athletes who register by 11:59 pm, Sunday, January 6, will have their ultra-personalized official bib number sent out via regular mail on Friday, January 11. ALL entrants will have generic bibs sent via email for home printing. Entrants who register after January 6th will have a bib number pdf sent via email ONLY. We would LOVE it if you wear your bib number while you complete your virtual run and it would be even better if you have some photos taken and share them with us.

3) Athletes must complete a half marathon (13.1 miles) or a full marathon (26.2 miles) during the 16-day period from January 12 - 27. These time periods have been extended from our first two virtual runs for several reasons: 1) many of our virtual athletes live in areas where weather will create obstacles too severe to run safely; 2) athletes participating in other popular winter races, such as Disney or Miami, can "double-dip" - earning extra bling for the same run; 3) this time-frame offers achievable goals for beginners who have made New Year Resolutions - perhaps we can provide some added motivation.

4) For the purposes of this virtual run, you may complete your mileage in one run or you can split it up over the 16 days - your choice. If that time span seems too easy, please remember our goals are to promote a healthy, active lifestyle AND to raise $$$ for local non-profits.

5) Please share your results, experience and photos at our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/523249147699834. Your results will NOT be recorded as official results, nor will you be eligible for age group awards or rankings. It is not necessary to send us emails to report results, but you are certainly welcome to share your comments with us.

6) In order to have your medal sent, you MUST post your run at the above Facebook page. We will send you an official finisher medal from our 8th Annual Clearwater Halfathon or 7th Annual Clearwater Marathon. These are gorgeous custom-made medals, measuring 3.5" across for the halfathon and 4" across for the marathon, along with custom ribbons.

7) If we have medals left over after distribution to finishers on-site at our race, we will be able to ship virtual run participants their medal within a week or so after the event.

8) However, if we run out of medals, we will need to order new ones and it will take 5-6 weeks, as they will be manufactured to our specific order.

9) Medals will be sent to virtual runners in the order of registration. This means some of you may receive medals within 2 weeks of our race, while others may receive them in 5-6 weeks.

10) Regardless of how it all unfolds, we will send out emails right after the race advising our virtual athletes of when medals will be shipped.

Thank you for participating in our virtual run - it is very much appreciated by those non-profits we support.

4TH ANNUAL FLORIDA HALFATHON CHALLENGE
This race is also the third opportunity to run 13.1 miles of our 4th Annual Florida Halfathon Challenge. In addition to competing for overall and age group awards each week, athletes' finishing times will be tracked to determine overall and age-group series' champions.

Athletes accumulate their total finishing time by completing any three of our halfathons during each season from Halloween through March. Those athletes who complete all four of our halfathons will have their slowest time dropped automatically.

The Florida Gulf Beaches Road Races Schedule
Sunday, October 28: 4th Annual Florida Halloween Halfathon & 5K Race, Ft. De Soto Park
Sunday, December 9: 11th Annual Florida Holiday Halfathon, Madeira Beach to Largo
Sunday, January 20: 8th Annual Clearwater Halfathon, 5-Miler, and 5K Fitness Walk, Clearwater
Sunday, March 17: 4th Annual Florida Beach Halfathon & 5K Race, Ft. De Soto Park

To recognize our fastest and most consistent halfathon athletes, we offer special overall and age-group rewards based on three halfathons. We also recognize athletes who complete all four of our halfathons with exclusive finisher medals and shirts.
