George Williamson, a lower leg amputee, swam the Caloosahatchee River (1.25 miles) in early 2013. He did this to raise awareness for the need for mentors for at risk children in his community. A year and several mentors later, he's ready to go again, but this time, he's inviting other trained swimmer. Funds raised will be used to benefit the kids. This is a 501(c)(3) organization, and donations are tax deductible.
The race begins on the Fort Myers side of the Midpoint Memorial bridge and ends at Horton Park in Cape Coral. Please note that check in, is on the Fort Myers side. The coast Guard has informed us today that they will only allow a total of 20 swimmers. The swim will now have only 1 class and will begin at 9:30
All swimmers are required to wear either bright colored swim cap or bright colored arm bands (no black swim wear)
Providing your own personal kayaker for safety and to help keep you on course, is mandatory by the county. One must be at least 18 years of age and able to help rescue if necessary.
Weather conditions/Rain Date
The swim will be cancelled if severe weather conditions are present. If Thunder/lightening, hurricane, sea height with a chop of more than 1 foot, and wind speeds of more than 10 knots are present, the swim will be cancelled and will be re-scheduled for November 9th. There will be no refunds.
This is a difficult swim in open water. Only those trained and able to swim the 1.25 mile course should register. Police and Coast Guard boats will be placed along the course for safety, and swimmers are encouraged to have a personal kayaker at their sides for added safety.
