Obesity is epidemic among school-age children, and the Cherokee County branch of the YMCA is attempting to address the situation with an afterschool program called Youth Fit for Life. Youth Fit for Life is designed for 5- to 12-year-olds and is offered three days a week after school for 12 weeks. The program consists of three components: physical activity, nutrition and health education, and the use of social skills. The YMCA works with school system providers and trains and hires the afterschool staff to deliver the program. Afterschool staffers complete a six-hour training course in order to teach the program. It is the goal of this race to raise funds to implement Youth Fit for Life as an afterschool program in all Cherokee County Schools.
