About This Activity

Is Bipolar Disorder over-diagnosed? Do magnets work for depression? Can addicts truly recover while taking drugs to do it? Is it in the best of interests of patients to take antipsychotic medication if it makes them obese and diabetic? Buy a seat and spend the day with the Brattleboro Retreat’s Medical Director, Fritz Engstrom, MD, who will use film clips to illustrate the many controversies and questions emerging in current psychiatry. We’ll supply the popcorn.

At the end of the this conference, participants should be able to:

1. Explain what distinguishes Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, depression and personality disorders from one another.

2. Identify when and how to have a dialogue with a prescriber about medication concerns.

3. List at least two warning signs of poor prescribing practices.

4. Discuss medications in the context of addictive disorders and the concept of recovery in the era of Suboxone and other medicines.

5. Differentiate when medication for anxiety is useful and when it is destructive.
