Instructor: Dawn Holtan. Dance theater is modern dance that embraces and explores theatrical narratives. In this class, students will generate movement and text that they will use to collaboratively create a dance theater performance piece. Students will learn simple warm-ups for body and voice; layer dance with spoken pre-existing text (poetry, songs, monologues); use thematic ideas to generate simple movement phrases and written texts; experiment with repetition of movement and sound; offer and receive positive feedback; and work together to create a devised dance theater performance piece. Possible themes we will explore: identity; transformative moments; surprising loss; being alone in a crowd; the power of connection; and more.
