What's Included

This class is perfect for the letterpress beginner. After a brief introduction to the history and vocabulary of letterpress printing, students will set type by hand, learning the layout of the California job case and the basics of word-spacing, line-spacing, and proofing using Kala's vast assortment of lead type. We'll then approach the fundamentals of printing with a Vandercook cylinder press. Learn how to set up the press and see how lockup, inking, paper selection, and impression each affect the quality of your print. Bring a favorite quote or short selection of prose and prepare to see your words in metal! Saturday Dec 3 & 10 from 10-4pm $15 Materials Fee payable to the teacher on the first day of class Instructor Bio: Elizabeth Boyne is an Oakland-based book artist who received her MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book. She uses handmade paper, letterpress printing, and traditional book forms to create artist books and book-inspired installations. She has served as an Artist-in-Residence at Kala Art Institute, and her work was most recently selected to appear in California Handmade, an exhibition presented by the Maloof Foundation and Craft in America. She works as a conservation technician at the Stanford University Libraries. www.elizabethboyne.com
