Mackenzie holds a Master's degree in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota, having studied under the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport. She is also a USA Track and Field certified coach and currently coaches at Edina High School in Minnesota.
When she's not writing or taking pictures, she's out running, biking, or cross-country skiing the Minneapolis chain of lakes with her little vizsla, Welly. She's currently training for her 13th marathon and hopes to tackle her first ultramarathon, as well as the American Birkebeiner next year.
