To provide opportunities for visual arts education and to develop visual arts awareness and appreciation throughout the greater Augusta community.
Founded in 1937, the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art serves as the Central Savannah River Area's only independent nonprofit visual art school and contemporary art gallery.
Housed in historic Ware's Folly (c. 1818) and the Walker-Mackenzie Studio (c. 1909), the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is proud to offer visual art education opportunities for students of all ages and interests. Quarterly studio classes and workshops are available in a wide range of media, from drawing and painting to photography, weaving, clay, and sculpture, for children, youth, and adults.
As Augusta's only nonprofit contemporary art gallery, each year over 30 exhibitions spotlight regional, national, and international artists in a variety of styles, techniques and media, including ceramics, photography, painting, drawing and printmaking.
