Profession: Doctor

How I got started in sports: As I was growing up on a ranch in South Dakota, outdoor activity was a part of life. I played basketball and ran in my teens and 20s. I took a break from running to concentrate on medical school. After having my three children, I rediscovered running to manage my weight and reduce stress.

Favorite spot to be active: Northern Colorado

Life/sport philosophy: The fear of falling is nothing compared to the fear of never leaving the ground.

Athletic highlights: I qualified for Boston during my second marathon, the 2005 Chicago Marathon. I then ran Boston with a PR of 3:31:23.

Athletic goals: To challenge my body to its limits in running by doing trail and adventure racing, and maybe some ultras.

Favorite fuel: Raisins, oatmeal, skim milk and bananas

Favorite indulgence: Chocolate and red wine

When I'm not running or cycling, I'm: Gardening or spending time with my family.

Other interesting facts: I had to overcome a collapsed lung while training for Boston.
