Business Writing for Busy Professionals: Part 2

About This Activity

Take your business writing skills to the executive level!

Students will practice using different writing styles and determining which is most appropriate for a specific reader and purpose. They will learn to properly manage active and passive verbs, transitions, and words with a positive or negative connotation. They will acquire techniques to simplify documents and make them more concise. Students will be able to recognize common surface errors that undermine their professional written image and understand how to fix them. The writing essentials covered in Part 1 will be revisited and reinforced through practice.

Objectives
  • You will be able to modify the writing style of your document to make it appropriate for your reader and purpose.
  • You will be able to use the following elements to create appropriate writing style and tone in your documents: parallel structure, non-sexist language, active and passive sentences, modifiers, and transitional words and phrases.
  • You will be able to correct vague words and make verbs, points of view, and tone consistent within one document.
  • You will be able to cut unnecessary words from your documents and make your messages shorter and therefore clearer.
