What's Included

Breathe new life into an existing work! In this course, students will break down scenes, concentrating on getting an actor’s best performance. Bring your own scenes/monologues (Are you planning to audition for a specific show? Let‘s work on it!!). Or, scenes can be provided by the instructor. Starting with two/three person scenes, we’ll discern character choices within that scene, using the text to evaluate that character’s objectives and obstacles. We’ll then expand into larger group/scene work, strengthening collaboration and ensemble building. Actors will apply and reinforce practical strategies to make a character come alive in a scene. Finally, students will examine monologue interpretation and technique, elaborating on character discoveries to deliver an honest, real monologue as an original and v INSTRUCTOR BIO: JOANNA HENRY has directed more than 70 productions over the years, most recently The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), the female version of The Odd Couple and the award-winning 33 Variations at LTA. She also directed Rabbit Hole (Ruby Griffith Award for Best Production of a Play) and a multitude of musicals, including Into The Woods, Gypsy, Company, and The Music Man. Other directing stints include three benefits (BC/EFA, the Olney Theater, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) and an acclaimed regional production of W;t on the Eastern Shore. In addition to receiving LTA’s Deborah Dunstan Rosewell Memorial Award for Directing (Into the Woods), Joanna has earned two ACT awards as best director, two WATCH nominations for directing, and an Alex Award for Education in the Arts nomination. Four of her productions have received Ruby Griffith awards. Joanna previously has taught Audition and Acting I classes at LTA and currently does private acting coaching.
