What's Included

This course is designed for singers at any level from beginners to those with some experience. It is appropriate for both new and returning students. Students will be taught the basics of vocal technique for proper singing including voice placement and production, breathing, and phrasing. Students will receive guidance in finding their voice type, choosing appropriate audition material, and preparing for an audition. Each student will learn at least one solo song, and will receive ongoing coaching not only in proper singing technique, but in interpreting and performing the song. We will discuss the meaning of the lyrics and where the song comes from (the plot of the musical, the character who sings the song), and how to make the song come alive by not just singing it, but interpreting and performing it. Students will perform for each other in class. By the end of the course, each student will have a solo song ready to present for performance and to use as an audition piece. Students will perform their songs for an audience of family and friends at the last class of the semester. INSTRUCTOR BIO: LINDA WELLS is a private vocal teacher and coach, working primarily with children and teens. She has appeared in many musical theatre productions locally and elsewhere including The Music Man, Sweeney Todd, The Sound of Music, 1776, The Most Happy Fella, The Secret Garden, Side by Side by Sondheim, Brigadoon, George M!, Company, Fiorello!, Guys and Dolls, and Godspell. Linda is also a professional church soloist and pianist. She was the Children’s Vocal Coach for LTA’s Scrooge: The Musical, and the Musical Director for LTA's A Christmas Carol (six times) and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (twice); for Aldersgate Church Community Theatre’s Mulan, Jr.; and for Mount Vernon Community Children's Theatre's Narnia. Linda will be the music director for LTA’s 2015 production of A Christmas Carol.
