This course is designed for singers at any level (beginners to experienced). It is appropriate for both new and returning students. Students will be taught the basics of vocal technique including voice placement and production, breathing, and phrasing. Students will receive guidance in finding their voice type, choosing audition material, and preparing for an audition. Each student will learn at least one solo song, and will receive ongoing coaching not only in proper singing technique, but in interpreting and performing the song. We will discuss the origin of the song (the plot of the musical, the character who sings the song), and how to make a song come alive by not just singing it, but interpreting and performing it. We will explore how to relate to the character and/or how the student can find ways to relate the song’s lyrics to their own lives, their own feelings, and their own experiences. This helps the singer to better understand and personalize the song, and to bring it to life when it is being performed! Students will perform for each other in class. By the end of the course, students will have a solo song ready to present for performance and to use as an audition piece. Students will perform their songs for an audience of family and friends at the last class of the semester.
