Stage Combat classes are here! This will be a continuing workshop with a monthly opportunity to join the class. New students can join at any time. Learn the skills of Stage Combat, from basic to advanced. This ongoing class will give actors a “Special Ability” that directors are looking for. Learn techniques based in historical fighting styles with added safety. Each actor will become proficient and be able to safely perform choreography created in class. THIS COURSE WILL COVER: • Basic slaps and falls • Hand to Hand combat • Rapier • Rapier accessories (Dagger/ Cloak/ Buckler) • Knife Fighting • Broadsword • Quarter staff • Found object • Bullwhip • Nunchaku • Fantasy sword • Advanced study of Historical Fight Manuals • More! JOHN DAVIS has been a fight director since 1992 and is a recognized instructor with the International Order of the Sword and Pen where he teaches along side the choreographers from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Highlander, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more. John has certified with the Society of American Fight Directors, The Society of British Fight Directors, The Fight Directors of Canada, and the Nordic Fight Society. John's Comedy Sword-Fighting show “Hack and Slash” has been performed more than four thousand times in sixteen countries including over one hundred shows on the front lines of Iraq and Afghanistan on six USO tours from 2001-2006. He has been choreographing fights and Directing at Weathervane Playhouse Since 2008.

Weathervane Playhouse’s Core Classes


Weathervane Playhouse’s core class curriculum provides every student with exceptional, consistent, dramatic training. In addition to the core curriculum, each age appropriate class provides additional skills to enrich our strong foundation. All classes have been developed to meet the State academic benchmarks within the applied Fine Art.

Core class content will include:

The study of theatre as an art form, and how it compares with other methods of telling a story (television, film, books, etc…)

The roles and responsibilities of actors, directors, designers and technicians.

Stage movement skills including: facing the audience, “cheating out,” using the upstage hand and using body language to communicate thoughts and feelings of a character.

Vocal projection and diction techniques for speaking loudly and clearly.

Stage directions and theatre vocabulary.

Methods for working in an ensemble and working as a group to present a performance at the end of each session.

Memorization techniques.

Dramatic exploration and creative expression through improvisation games and/or script work.

Theater history and/or historical, cultural and social contexts of a specific time period.

Character study through comparisons of story situations and their relationships to real life experiences.
