Brief Description

On Sunday, August 24th, 2008, paddlers from all over the United States and from as far away as Australia will take to the waters off of Southern California in the 33rd Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race, the premier and most historical paddleboard race in the world. Officially started in 1955 by Los Angeles County Lifeguard Bob Hogan, the first Catalina crossing was won in 1932 by Tom Blake, beating out Pete Peterson and Wally Burton in just under 6 hours.

 
 

Additional Information

Eligibility Open to men and women at least 18 years of age. Paddlers must be qualified to paddle in the Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race. Prequalification: If you completed the 2007 Catalina Classic in under 9 hours your are automatically qualified for the 2008 race (as long as your complete entry is received by the deadline). New paddlers must complete a designated qualifying race and finish in a specified time and/or place (see race website for more info). Registration Contestants must pre-register online on or before August 1, 2008. Mail-in entries are no longer accepted. Course Race starts at the West side of the main pier, Isthmus, Catalina and proceeds North to Manhattan Beach Pier (32 miles). All contestants must round the R10 Buoy off of Lunada Bay passing between the buoy and the shore. Paddleboard Classes Stock: 12’ or less, weighing 20 lbs. or more. (Stock boards will be weighed and measured at the start and finish.) Unlimited: No length or weight restrictions. Escort Requirements Each contestant must provide his/her own escort boat to assist in navigation, nutrition, and first aid. All escort boats must be seaworthy and equipped with a compass and a working VHF radio capable of transmitting 25 watts. NO PERSONAL WATER CRAFT SHALL BE USED AS AN ESCORT. Awards Given to the first six finishers in each class. Names of the top two finishers in each class will be added to the Perpetual Trophy which bears the names and times of previous winners. Certificates will be awarded to all finishers. Rules All qualifying applicants will be provided a race packet containing race rules, course and race number.
