How to Create an Active Family

When some people, including kids, hear the words "working out" or "exercising" they begin to cringe.  Exercise can be very daunting to some because they think they are not in good shape to start.

According to kidshealth.org, the average child is spending five and a half hours per day watching TV, playing with their mobile devices, playing video games, or searching the internet, instead of playing outside and getting some exercise. No wonder childhood obesity continues to be on the rise.

Becoming an active family is the first step you can take to encourage your children to live a healthier lifestyle. Head outside with your children and have fun while increasing everyone's heart rate. Show them all the different ways you can exercise (without necessarily walking or running on a treadmill) and make some lasting memories.

According to kidshealth.org, children over the age of two need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on most days. Try some of the following activities with your kids to get them moving.

Go Swimming

Visit your local community pool, the beach, or even a lake. Just recently, my five year old and I were able to do some lap swimming together at our local YMCA and he had so much fun with me. You never know when children may be able to participate in something you enjoy too. Just ask.

Play in Your Backyard

One of my favorite things to do with my boys is play outside while dinner is cooking. We play baseball, hide and seek, tag, soccer, Frisbee, kickball, you name it and we have done it. Their little hearts are pumping, their cheeks are red, and they always show me the sweat on their foreheads.
