Active City Spotlight: San Francisco

Your Guide to Running, Cycling, Hiking and Getting Active in the Bay Area

Places to Go

In addition to the running and cycling suggestions above, locals go for open-water swims at Aquatic Park, where buoys can guide you and help measure your swim distance. Be prepared: the water can be cold!

Races to Remember

The Golden Gate Triathlon in June swims along the coast of Crissy Field, bikes through the Presidio and runs across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Other races include:
  • The Escape From Alcatraz triathlon is famous for its 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island through the chilly San Francisco Bay.
  • The Marin County Triathlon in October stays along the coastline of Marin County, offering beautiful bay views.
  • The 70.3- and 140.6-mile Vineman races are located about 60 miles north of San Francisco in Windsor, California.
