Life is Busy. You know it and I know it. We are all very aware of this ever-present fact of life. But, the increasing business of life does not change the fact that there are less fortunate individuals out there; nor does it remove our responsibility as community members and as fellow human beings to help out. As a symbol of this responsibility, PHAST was organized. If we as participants can give service during probably the busiest and most intense activity out there, then why can't we each find ways, no matter how small, to help others each and every, very busy, day of our lives. This is the reason behind the PHAST. This is why we SWIM. BIKE. RUN. SERVE.
PHAST stands for Promoting Health And Service Triathlon. It is a triathlon with a twist, and that twist is for the better. Our motto is Run. BIke. Swim. Serve. Participants complete all the traditional events of a triathlon, running, biking, and swimming, but the focus of this event is to give back; back to your health and back to your community. Normal triathlons are composed of 3 phases: swim, bike, and run, with normal transitions between each segment. But, the PHAST is not a "NORMAL" triathlon, it is better! Far better! In the PHAST, the transition zones between the different segments will now include a short but very significant service portion. Between the swim and bike segments, competitors will be filling Emergency Room bags filled with goods, donated by Ronald McDonald's House Charity of Greater Las Vegas, for children and families that have been admitted into the trauma centers in local hospitals. Between the bike and running segments, each participant will spruce up a brown paper lunch bags with crayons and markers provided. Later these bags will be filled with sac lunches by volunteers of by Ronald McDonald's House Charity of Greater Las Vegas. Racers are prohibited from progressing to the next stage until each task is completed. The participants will cross the finish line with the bags in tow. The following week, my wife and I, along with a few other volunteers, will hand deliver these items to children and families that have been admitted to the hospital in less than desirable circumstances.
This year, all gifts assembled during the race, will be donated to children and family through Ronald McDonald's House Charity of Greater Las Vegas. In addition to the assembled gifts $10 (up to the full amount of registration, depending on participation) from each participant's registration fee is protected against race fees and will be donated to RMHC of Greater Las Vegas
